We wrapped up the 2025 EBB General Assembly 🤝   A big thank you to all our Members and Supporters who joined us in Brussels to look back at the past year, and towards the future for the #biodiesel sector in Europe. With RED III implementation now underway, trade and #sustainability verification front of mind, and a new EU term taking shape, this year marked a key moment for renewable fuels in Europe.   This year’s programme featured: 💬 A workshop on the transposition of #REDIII across EU Member States 🥂 A well-attended cocktail & dinner with stakeholders from across the #biofuels ecosystem 🤝 Our formal General Assembly, led by Secretary General Xavier Noyon and EBB President Dickon Posnett (Argent Energy)   Together, we reflected on a eventful year for EU energy and climate policy, and explored how our industry can continue contributing to a transition to #netzero in all #transport modes 🚚🚢✈️   #FAME #HVO #renewablefuels

The Council of the European Union has officially adopted the targeted amendment to the EU CO₂ standards for light-duty vehicles – a strong signal of political resolve to offer short-term flexibility to Europe’s automotive sector. But let’s be clear: temporary relief is not a long-term strategy. Together with our partners in the Network for Sustainable Mobility, we call on the European Commission to deliver on its promises: 🚘 Advance the review of the CO₂ standards regulation to Q3/Q4 2025, as pledged in the Automotive Industry Action Plan. 🏆 Champion a truly technology-neutral policy framework, as promised by President Ursula von der Leyen. ❗ All biofuels used in the EU should meet the same sustainability standards—no exceptions❗ While #biofuels are subject to #sustainability verification, more-and-more fraudulent practices are being uncovered. This threatens both Europe’s climate goals and the competitiveness of compliant businesses. The EBB, as the largest association representing #biodiesel (#FAME & #HVO) producers urgently asks for a review of the verification system. ⚠️ Proven fraudulent but not prosecuted ⚠️   The suspicion: A #HVO plant in the United Arab Emirates only existed on paper, and the issued certificates were falsified 👀 In response, the German Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (responsible for the #sustainability certification of #biofuels) temporarily froze a large volume of certificates back in April.   ❌ Turns out, the "advanced" biofuel was #palmoil based! The punishment..? None. Instead, the Bundesanstalt für Landwirtschaft und Ernährung felt obliged to unfreeze the certificates to protect the companies that bought the fraudulent products. What about the protection of compliant producers and traders, don’t they deserve protection?!   ⚠️ Unbelievable but true: Obvious fraud with significant volumens - without consequences. A thorough review of biofuels verification is needed: #StopbiofuelsFraud.

👏 Good! The European Parliament today agreed on a temporary solution to avoid potentially very disruptive fines for automotive manufacturers. 👏 ✅ It’s good to see the Commission strike a balance between ambition and pragmatism, allowing for a more flexible approach to achieve our #climate goals. Job done..? Well, no. Now it's time to think more structurally and long-term. ➡️ Speeding up the reviews of the CO₂ Regulations is crucial to the #biodiesel sector. Similar flexibilities should apply to HOW we achieve the EU climate goals. With #technologyneutrality as a core principle, ALL solutions can contribute to the decarbonisation of #LDV and #HDV road transport. #CarbonNeutralFuels #renewablefuels #biofuels #FAME #HVO

We welcome the recognition of the importance of combating biofuels fraud, and the fact that the Committee on the #Sustainability of #Biofuels, Bioliquids and Biomass fuels is putting forward concrete measures to address it. 👍 We support the proposal to grant Germany the ability to ask for additional evidence, and to eventually withdraw certifications and proofs of sustainability for the fraudulent volumes in question. 👎 However, doing so will be hard in practice. As the European Commission puts it: those volumes "are likely to have been accounted for and/or marketed and are therefore no longer available and no longer verifiable”.   This shows us, once more, the need for a systemic reform. #Fraud needs to be prevented, and if it still occurs it needs to be prosecuted swiftly.
